Porch Sessions

Four Tuesday afternoons this July, I’m running a small guitar group for kids from my porch, right here in Salmo. These small group sessions are outdoors and focused on actually playing from day one.

The kids start with catchy riffs and melodies so they’re playing something real and recognizable right away, while building the fundamentals underneath. They also get access to the NGA online portal with video lessons to support practice between sessions.

Kids learn recognizable riffs and melodies right away, which keeps motivation high and builds real skills — rhythm, timing, finger strength — without it feeling like work.
Easy rhythms system
I introduce rhythms in a way that’s designed specifically for beginners, so kids can apply them almost immediately rather than drilling patterns that don’t feel like music yet.

I’ve been teaching kids guitar for over 30 years and the thing that works best at this age is keeping it hands-on, keeping the group small, and making sure every session ends with something they can play at home. Porch Sessions is built around that. It’s also a natural way into the fall schedule — July students get first priority when September spots open up, and those tend to fill fast.

Duration: 40–60 minutes depending on group size
