Why we came to Nelson BC
My name is André van Berlo and I am the father of 2 awesome kids and husband to my amazing wife Renée. We’re originally from the Netherlands but we’ve been living in Nelson since 2015. I founded the Nelson Guitar Academy and work as the main guitar teacher and music instructor. I also worked as a guitar instructor at Selkirk Music College for about 4 years.
I’m incredibly grateful my children get to grow up here. Some of our favourite activities are skiing, hiking, camping trips with friends, mountain biking, gardening, making music, fishing, and so much more. It still amazes me how much this place has to offer!
Next to music and all the outdoor activities I also have a deep interest in learning behaviour, performance psychology, and personal development. I have found that this knowledge has helped myself, parents, and my students in numerous occasions. It is probably the reason why I absolutely love the coaching aspect of being a music instructor. Being able to have a positive impact, however small it may be, feels incredibly fulfilling.
I think people experience me as a lighthearted, comforting, and caring person. There’s always humour in my lessons but when needed there’s a warm and serious side to me where students are free to express what’s on their mind.
